National Photographic Portrait Prize 2010 Finalist
James Ross is a committed Dungeons and Dragons player. He highly values the time spent in this other world, a world that has an internal consistency that is reflected in his own experiences there. Play allows us to escape the real world and to create another. We can forget, disguise or temporarily shed our personality. We can escape ourselves and become something else. I am interested in those on the brink of mainstream society. They are involved in their own created realities and are usually the most interesting minds around; minds that don't conform to an accepted or comfortable standard. Accordingly, their faces often grow to be quite indicative of the minds they sheathe.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize is an annual event intended to promote the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by both professional and aspiring Australian photographers.
