National Photographic Portrait Prize 2011 Finalist
It was 6.30 on a chilly June morning and the sun was just touching Mt Gillen on the outskirts of Alice Springs when this photograph was taken of Caleb Hart, 19, and Charlie Maher, 27. Taken to accompany a magazine article about Robert de Castella’s groundbreaking Indigenous Marathon Project, the picture captures determination and slight apprehension in the faces of the young men who in November, along with team-mates Juan Darwin and Joseph Davies, became the first Australian Aborigines to complete the New York Marathon.
The NPPP exhibition is selected from a national field of entries. The annual exhibition, now in its fourth year, reflects the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
