Transition: Nikki & Nick, 2011

by Emma Phillips

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 Finalist

Nikki Joyce has transitioned from male to female in the past twelve months. She is 42, but has known from the age of five that her body betrayed her absolute essence. She was 25 before she spoke with anyone about her conflict and often reflects on her tormented, silent and isolated childhood. 'Transition: Nikki & Nick' attempts to place 42-year-old Nikki in her childhood surrounds, with 'herself' as a five-year-old alongside her. By her own admission, she has in some ways just begun living - giving Nick (Campbell Judge) the chance to thrive.
