Jessie Bonson
My first series of photographs was of family and friends but eventually I experimented with self portraits. Confident about my own feelings, I know what I’m thinking. White paint is an exploration, a way of asking questions about my own Aboriginality. It is about colour, camouflage, culture, texture and aesthetic play. Streaks create an element of randomness, telling a personal story, portraying a version of me. sister girl captures a moment, an expression, a shared feeling. It might remain a bit of a mystery.
A short visual essay of some of the works in the National Youth Self Portrait Prize 2010.
