‘Where have all the flowers gone explores the florid magic of the natural world, embracing the soft romance of flowers and their sexual allure. The image embraces all the things we were denied as boys growing up in homophobic and traditionally masculine suburban environments. It captures the surreal sparkling beauty of two queer lovers refusing to descend into the darkness, as bold and bright as a flower, imbued with the essence of Jean Genet’s autobiographical novel Our Lady of the Flowers (1943).’
Will Huxley and Garrett Huxley are Naarm/Melbourne-based collaborative visual and performance artists. The Huxleys’ works traverse the categories of costume, film and photography in what they describe as a visual assault of sparkle, surrealism and the absurd.
