National Photographic Portrait Prize 2026 Finalist

pigment photographic print (frame: 59.8cm x 59.8cm depth 4.0cm)

‘This image features Eva in her home in Canberra and was shot as part of a series of portraits titled Make this house a home. All of the portraits begin with a conversation about how each subject feels connected to their bodies. We work through gestures, searching for easing of tension, searching for vigour. How do you make a home from this shell you’ve been given? Like spaces, our bodies hold history, memory and evidence of our experiences; the site for our hopes, dreams, anxieties and fears to play out.’

Madeline Bishop is a Naarm/Melbourne-based photographer whose work focuses on the dynamics of relationships and how people interact socially. Bishop creates scenes that are staged yet candid, interrogating the tension between the real and the performative.
