National Photographic Portrait Prize 2026 Finalist
‘The Falling was photographed in Croajingolong National Park, Victoria, on Gunaikurnai and Bidawal Country. The figure in the image, Gretel Taylor, is a dance artist, curator and researcher known for her site-specific performance work that uses movement to interrogate colonial relationships to land. This collaborative work was made as a response to the excess, greed and inertia of those with the power to enact change at this moment of ecological collapse. She hopes we can catch ourselves on the way down.’
Laki Sideris is a Naarm/Melbourne-based photographer and filmmaker who regularly collaborates with Gretel Taylor. Taylor’s performance practice presents dance as a mode of sensing and moving with the surrounding environment.
The People’s Choice Award is generously supported by the Calvert-Jones Foundation, with the artist who wins the most votes receiving $10,000.
Voting closes Wednesday 30 September 2026.

from Saturday 22 August
