Judy Morris, 1977

Carol Jerrems

gelatin silver photograph on paper (image: 30.3cm x 37.8cm. sheet: 40.2cm x 50.7cm. frame: 54.7cm x 74.2cm)

Actor, screenwriter and director Judy Morris (b. 1947) was one of the leads in Esben Storm’s film In search of Anna, for which Jerrems was the stills photographer. This photograph captures Morris in sharp Queensland light – dappled and fierce – highlighting her windswept hair, direct gaze and defiant pose. There is a decisiveness to Morris’ expression and the turn of her head that seems considered but natural. Jerrems has caught a fleeting yet singular moment, avoiding forced formalism but embodying more than mere chance.
