Self portrait, 1973

Carol Jerrems

gelatin silver photograph on paper (image: 17.8cm x 25.4cm. sheet: 28.0cm x 35.6cm. frame: 43.2cm x 58.5cm)

While this self portrait depicts a scene filled with intimate details, it also evokes a confronting sense of absence and disconnection. The photograph was taken in what looks like the same room as the Ambrose Campbell portrait. Here, an unknown lover lies curled up in the sheets of the dishevelled bed. Their back is to us, they are not named in the title of the work, and they are distinctly separate from Jerrems, who sits upright, hands in her lap, looking at the camera. In the photograph of Campbell, Jerrems is positioned so she is reflected in the mirror, but here she is the focal point, with the mirror revealing nothing but the detritus of the room.
