Yawuru dancer Tara Gower and Torres Strait Islander dancer Baden Hitchcock were photographed in Chicago during Bangarra Dance Theatre’s 27th international tour. Through the company’s international touring program Bangarra undertakes the role of ambassador for First Nations culture, sharing knowledge and raising awareness of the rich cultural history of Australia’s First Nations communities.
‘Being photographed near the Trump building was a political comment on ancient ways of living and how thousands of years of knowledge has been ignored. I felt free, representing the strength of culture through dance.’
Tara Gower
‘In cities you’re still on Country, you don’t have to be out bush. This photo is powerful because it is the voice of our people, land and sea calling out for change.’
Baden Hitchcock
