Darling Portrait Prize 2024 Finalist
Mark Tweedie
born Australia 1982
Vagabond #10 2023
oil and synthetic polymer paint on canvas
‘Vagabond #10 is my breakup painting. The work has grown from my feelings of being disconnected, alone and in many ways, nomadic, and is an exploration of a longing for home that has deepened with age. The landscape depicted is the John Forrest National Park, located on the outskirts of Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia; a place I would often visit but never felt at home. The composition references a photograph by Violet Joyce, first published in Perth’s Western Mail newspaper in the early 1900s.’
Mark Tweedie is a Boorloo/Perth-based artist whose work is characterised by themes of family, memory and ageing, often exploring formative childhood years, connection to place and lineage.
