National Photographic Portrait Prize 2023 Finalist
Susan Balbunga, a Warrawarra cultural leader and master weaver, is one of the last people with the knowledge to make a bamugura. This versatile mat is used for many activities in daily life, from a sleeping blanket or mat to carrying firewood or food, among other things. So far it has taken her three months full time to weave this – a time-consuming process to make the weave tight enough to last a lifetime.
The exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
