Téa-Anna Parvathy Murrin – Australian cultural identity, 2023

Franca Turrin

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2023 Finalist

digital photograph on paper (frame: 138.5cm x 95.5cm depth 6.0cm)

'Being of Italian and Indian heritage and growing up in Australia, I've always questioned my cultural identity. After all, I'm neither Indian, nor Italian nor your typical Aussie – or am I?'

This is a portrait study about cultural identity in Australia. What does it mean to be an Australian? It's an evolving perception constantly being moulded by the values of each wave of newcomers. Téa's cultural identity is personified in the image by chosen objects and flora.
