Darling Portrait Prize 2022 People's Choice Award
I live in Melbourne and have spent the last two years isolating during the pandemic. This was only possible because of all the essential workers doing their jobs while risking their own, and their families', health. This portrait of Sabine Desrondaux, a postie, is a tribute to the courage and determination of all those who kept society functioning. You can see those attributes on her proud face. When she posed for me, I asked her to 'look at me like you haven't got time for this shit'. She said as the mother of two teenagers she could pull that face at will.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
