Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist
Ngambri Elder Aunty Matilda House-Williams is a proud Aboriginal woman who has dedicated her life to Indigenous affairs and seeking social justice for Australia's First Peoples. Born and raised at Erambie near Cowra and Hollywood in Yass, Matilda returned to her ancestral home of Kamberri/Canberra in 1963, becoming a prominent Indigenous activist and an integral figure in the development of services and recognition for Aboriginal people. This portrait aims to evoke a sense of storytelling – to share Matilda's story of resilience, tireless contribution to community and culture, and strong connection to Country that continues to inspire and educate many.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
