Zaachariaha, 2021

Michael Simms

Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist

Zaachariaha Fielding is an acclaimed musician and painter from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in SA, and vocalist for Electric Fields – an award-winning music duo combining modern soul with the culture of the APY people.

I first saw Electric Fields perform at the Sydney Mardi Gras, and felt an immediate chill down my spine. The powerful music alongside Zaachariaha's breathtaking vocals held me utterly spellbound. Throughout our sitting, I was struck by Zaachariaha's authenticity as an artist – a special combination of being open, connected, vulnerable and brave. These are the qualities I attempted to convey in this painting.
