Gareth, 2021

Gareth volunteers enormous amounts of time and energy to the arts and all in the Warrnambool region benefit from it in some way. I wanted to depict a side of Gareth most never see. To see behind the mask he wears, both figuratively and literally. To raise the question of what is the value of the arts, and how do we look after those who volunteer so selflessly? Gareth loves comics and his house is full of superheroes – the Batman mask is a nod to his private passions vs the public roles he leads. Of heroes – I believe Gareth is one.

The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
