Triceratops, 2021

Esther Erlich

Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist

It might seem odd to compare a 5 ¾ year old boy to a prehistoric dinosaur like a Triceratops, but once you have had a conversation with Joe it is evident that an ancient head sits on those shoulders. While Joe has a wicked sense of humour and can be a bit spiky when provoked, he is a sweet, serious and sensitive boy who, in spite of wearing a very playful hat, took the job of modelling for me very seriously, and that is how I have painted him.
