Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist
This self portrait was painted during the second year of the COVID pandemic. It represents a time of uncertainty, isolation and loss.
The small reproduction of Gustave Courbet's painting Landscape and a dead horse was added later. It symbolises the passing of a friend's mother and those who died alone from the virus due to the-then quarantine laws.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
