Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
Dr Brendan Nelson AO is a public figure, politician and physician. He has served as Director of the Australian War Memorial; Australia’s Ambassador to the EU, Belgium, Luxembourg and NATO; Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Party; Minister for Defence; Minister for Education, Science and Training; and President of the Australian Medical Association. Over the course of his portrait sitting, Brendan struck me as someone with a deep sense of service and love of country. He epitomises all those individuals in public life who have lived lives in the service of others, and are motivated by a genuine desire to effect positive change.
The Darling Prize is a new biennial prize for Australian portrait painters, painting Australian sitters. The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
