Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist
A portrait painted wholly from life over many sessions. Ian is a fascinating character; from his youthful exploits – cycling across the Nullarbor Plain in his teens – to his infectious generosity, catching and relocating snakes for friends, and his passionate love of the bush, nature and wildlife. These events are merely the tiniest of snippets. I have tried to create an image that hints at Ian's down-to-earth, generous and sometimes cheeky character, while hopefully creating a sense of fascination and curiosity.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
