Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Art Handlers' Award
As an Australian living with disability, I wanted my portrait to be of someone truly deserving of recognition, so I selected my primary carer, Warren. A former lecturer in science, mathematics and computing, he is generous in educating others. Warren is skilled in fine woodwork after instruction from friend and internationally renowned craftsman Geoff Hannah. He is committed to wife Robyn, best mate to 23-year-old black Burmese cat Mendelssohn, and a keen fisherman. Most importantly, at 75 years young, Warren is my inspirational primary carer after a truck ran into me resulting in spinal cord injury which robbed me of my independence.
The Art Handlers' Award for 2022 went to Weight of the Mind's Periapt, 2021 by Jane Allan.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
