Across three interactive sessions this series (13, 20 and 27 October) will take a deep dive into six leading Australian women photographers. Join one or two online sessions or the entire series!
Together with facilitators from the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Australia, students will participate in discussions and interactive activities to gain an understanding of each artist’s practice and the context in which they made these works.
Session 1 will explore the topic of art and politics looking at the work of photographers Brenda L Croft and Carol Jerrems. In this session students will engage with ideas including the relationship between artist and sitter, materiality and technique and the role of photography in social issues.
Session 2 will explore the genre of still life through the work of photographers Olive Cotton and Anne Zahalka. In this session, students will engage with ideas including composition, objectivity and everyday objects as subjects.
Session 3 will explore art and film through the work of photographers Tracey Moffatt and Robyn Stacey. In this sessions students will engage with ideas including the evolution of photography, deliberate artifice and the future of the medium.
