Access

The National Portrait Gallery is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We aim to connect people with portraiture by reducing any barriers to participate in our programs, view our exhibitions and have a meaningful experience onsite or online.

Parking

Our underground carpark can be accessed from Parkes Place. It is open seven days per week and closes at 5:30pm. Parking spaces for people with mobility difficulties are provided in the carpark close to the public access lifts. Disability parking permit holders can validate their parking ticket for free at the Information Desk. Please note that there are no parking spaces for mini-buses, campervans or trailers in the visitor carpark; and the visitor carpark has a low clearance of 2.2m.

Guide dogs

Registered assistance and Guide Dogs are more than welcome in all spaces at the Gallery.

Companion cards

The Gallery recognises Companion Cards. Companion Card holders receive a complimentary ticket for their companion to all paid exhibitions and programs.

Hearing loops

There are hearing loops available in the Liangis Theatre and Terrace Rooms. To use, switch your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting.

Toilets

Accessible toilets are located on the ground level next to both the Cloak Room and Education Studio.

Proximity Alarms

To keep the art safe, some spots in the Gallery have sensors that set off a beeping alarm if you’re too close. If you step back, they’ll turn off. (We all need our personal space.) This alarm is different to our emergency evacuation one which includes a verbal message.

Access support

The Gallery provide free access services to all visitors with disability or access requirements. Some programs may require purchase of an exhibition ticket.

PROGRAMS

Portrait conversations

We offer programs and tours in association with Dementia Australia, and also for people living with Dementia and their carers. These programs aim to create meaningful experiences for people living with Dementia in a safe, gentle and social setting.

Access tours

We offer online and onsite programs that are audio described for visitors who have low vision or are blind; and Auslan interpreted programs for visitors who are hard of hearing or D/deaf. Our online streamed programs are captioned.

Relaxed mornings

Around every three months we open our main collection before our usual opening hours, welcoming anyone of any age who would benefit from a more relaxed gallery experience. We have low sensory spaces, quiet areas and creative activities for family groups.

Disability inclusion action plan

Our Disability Inclusion Action Plan has been developed as part of our commitment to best practice ideals, so that the Gallery site, the Collection, exhibitions and public programs are accessible to all.

NPG access champions

We have a group of ‘access champions’ from across all sections of the Gallery, who help to enable other staff to have a voice and to take ownership of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan.
