Assisted access

Access and Learning staff at the National Portrait Gallery provide a variety of inclusive programs, which may include visual, auditory and tactile experiences. With a bit of notice, we can also adapt a program or tour in accordance with the needs of your group. Vision-impaired visitors may benefit from the Portrait Stories app, which can be set to display very large text or to use VoiceOver.

Portrait Conversations

The Portrait Gallery offers programs/tours in association with Alzheimer’s Australia and also for people living with Dementia and their carers.

Programs for hearing-impaired students

An award-winning program for hearing-impaired school-aged students has been delivered annually since 2012 with the support of ADFAS Canberra.

Programs for sight-impaired students

A tactile resource and program for sight-impaired students and visitors is available. Alternatively, vision-impaired visitors may like to explore the galleries with the Portrait Stories app as a digital companion.
