KEW EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL
Years five and six students at Kew East Primary School explored the life and legacy of the operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Melba was Australia’s first international opera star. She was born in the inner - Melbourne suburb of Richmond, not far from Kew East.
Working in small groups, students created a collage portrait honoring Melba. These artworks are mixed media incorporating materials such as, pipe cleaners, paper, mosaics, sequins, textiles, paint, and photography. Students came up with the novel idea of incorporating 'role-play' by photographing a member(s) of their group to pose as Melba; students dressed up as Melba, struck poses and took photos. It was fun!
