A dedicated firefighter conducting a backburn, as we attempted to construct containment lines in the early days of the 2019 Sarabah bushfire near Canungra in Queensland. Nearly four weeks later – after thousands of volunteer hours – the fire was contained, but not before it had ravaged the Gold Coast hinterland and destroyed thirteen homes, including the historic Binna Burra Lodge. At the height of the fire, wind gusts reached nearly 90 kilometres per hour.
The exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
