Business executive and entrepreneur; Branson set up the Virgin recording studio, record shops and mail-order record company in the early 1970s, expanding the group to include airline and rail travel, media, megastores, financial services and communications networks.
Since installing a submarine made out of tyres outside the Hayward Gallery in London in 1983, the Scottish artist David Mach has acquired a reputation for his witty and inventive use of unusual materials. The portrait of Branson includes numerous postcards of the National Portrait Gallery's self-portrait with a nude model by Dame Laura Knight. Commissioned by the Trustees Kim Spooner (Winner)
