In keeping with many of Jerrems’ photographs, David Dalatnghu Gulpilil AM (1953–2021) and Michael Edols (1942–2018) are photographed in an unremarkable Melbourne backyard. Their figures overlap, with Gulpilil in the foreground angling an empty metal bucket towards the photographer and Edols looking on, arms crossed and curious, his attention directed toward Gulpilil rather than the camera. In this interplay between the subjects, we can feel Jerrems’ presence in the scene.
Yolngu dancer and award-winning actor Gulpilil performed in films such as Walkabout, Storm Boy, Rabbit Proof Fence and the Yolngu-language Ten Canoes. Edols, a close friend of Jerrems and another Prahran alumnus, was the cinematographer on In search of Anna, directed by Jerrems’ partner Esben Storm.
